About Mt. Mitake
Mt. Mitake in Ome City, Tokyo, is easily accessible from central Tokyo and is a popular spot for hikers as the gateway to mountain trailing in Okutama. Musashi Mitake Jinja, located at the summit, is a Shinto shrine that accepts many worshippers with their pets to pray for their health. It was once a sacred mountain with a high level of magical power as one of the major bases of Shugendo and esoteric Buddhism in the Kanto region, where many mountain ascetics and learned monks gathered and practiced asceticism. Furthermore, it was revered by many powerful samurai, from shogun to local samurai lords, relying on its miraculous power, and it flourished for centuries. Even today, Oshi priests, who are descendants of the ascetics, monks, or samurai, have continued traditional religious life in their quaint houses that stood at the middle or foot of the mountain for several hundred years. They also have many supporters over a dozen generations throughout the Kanto region. Let's experience the foundational culture of Japan through such a unique and historical mountain!
